Locals are pretty sure how the still burning coal Locals are pretty sure how the still burning coal fires underneath the (former) town of Centralia, Pennsylvania, began. Most people believe it started with a purposeful burning of the town dump that spread to a coal seam underground.  In 1979, according to Slate, the mayor of Centralia checked the fuel level of his underground gas tanks. The dipstick was hot. He took the temperature: 172*F.  Two years later, a tween fell into a 150-foot-deep sinkhole that opened up beneath his feet while he was playing in his grandma's backyard. Fortunately, he grabbed a tree root, and his cousin was nearby to help him out. The sinkhole was full of lethal levels of carbon monoxide. It opened up beneath his feet in the backyard. Think about that for a minute. There was visible evidence of these fires on the surface with smoke and steam vents still there today. The underground fires span 400 acres and are expected to burn for over 200 years due to the amount of coal. Graffiti Highway once covered Pennsylvania Route 61 but large portions of dirt were brought in to cover the highway and prevent street racing, illegal dumping, etc. Portions of the graffiti is still visible today.  #centraliapa #graffiti #graffitihighway

Amazing. Him Outdoors had a hunch. So that pic of me with the first place winner? That's before the winner was announced. Holmes tore through those peppers. Event: Bower's Chili Pepper Festival When: September 11 and 12, 2026, 9 AM - 6 PM Where: William Delong Memorial Park in Bowers, PA Cost: There is an admission fee. $4 in 2026. The rest of the festival involves numerous pepper vendors peddling salsas, hot pepper sauces, pepper rubs, pepper jerky, and a few non-pepper vendors, too. When Him Outdoors mentions taking a "wee walk," I When Him Outdoors mentions taking a "wee walk," I have learned that "wee" does not mean short. It also does not mean easy or simple. It does mean fun. Hawk Mountain Sanctuary boasts over 2,500 acres of protected forest and several miles of hiking trails.  As usual, we winged it. Just walking around a rough and rocky 3-4 hour trail loop without water or snacks. We did not plan well.  We saw a River of Rocks (and a large snake).  We saw the three buzzards.  We saw deer crashing through the brush.  I exclaimed over a hummingbird at a feeder, realized it was part of the feeder, and then felt silly. Until I realized no, it actually was a real hummingbird. D'oh. All the embarrassment there.  Hawk Mountain Sanctuary in Kempton, PA, is incredible and open year round. If you like "wee walks," this is the place to try next.  #hiking #mountain #pennsylvania
