When Him Outdoors mentions taking a "wee walk," I have learned that "wee" does not mean short.

It also does not mean easy or simple.

It does mean fun.

Hawk Mountain Sanctuary boasts over 2,500 acres of protected forest and several miles of hiking trails.

As usual, we winged it. Just walking around a rough and rocky 3-4 hour trail loop without water or snacks. We did not plan well.

We saw a River of Rocks (and a large snake).
We saw the three buzzards.
We saw deer crashing through the brush.

I exclaimed over a hummingbird at a feeder, realized it was part of the feeder, and then felt silly. Until I realized no, it actually was a real hummingbird. D'oh. All the embarrassment there.

Hawk Mountain Sanctuary in Kempton, PA, is incredible and open year round. If you like "wee walks," this is the place to try next.

"Italian Cookies" Cookbook Review and Interview with Domenica Marchetti? * swoon * How much fun is that? Spoiler alert: All the fun.

Okay, you'll have to hop over to Little Indiana Bakes for the interview. But for now, this video, this video right here is your 60 second look into why you need this charming Italian cookies cookbook.

I know cookbooks. Quantity doesn't necessarily mean anything, but hey, I have over 1,000 of them (and I use and write in them). I have already baked from this one once and all set for round two ... once I decide which recipe to make.

I chose the Piped Butter Cookies. I used my grandpa's 1/2" star nozzle. He was a professional baker, and all his baking tips now belong to me. Pretty cool, right?

These cookies. Wow. These cookies. They look AND taste like they came from a really good Italian bakery. These are the kind that have melted chocolate on one side that's sprinkled with jimmies.

Getting the hang of piping cookies was slightly tricky, but that's where the melted semisweet chocolate came in! I dipped the ugly side right in, threw on some rainbow jimmies, and my oh my, you'd never know they were sort of odd looking to start with. 😂

Homemade granola is super simple. I can’t believe

Homemade granola is super simple. I can’t believe I’ve been making this recipe since 2012! I originally found it on Food.com. I’ve since added coconut (about a cup) and raisins (if I’m sharing with “Him Outdoors”). I stir those in after the granola has baked. I’d suggest golden raisins here. They blend in nicely color-wise.

1. 300* oven.
2. Grease your heaviest baking sheet. Set aside.
3. Mix Old Fashioned Oats, Almonds (or other nuts), Brown Sugar, Salt, and Cinnamon together in a large bowl. (Use good cinnamon, and not that $1 kind of cinnamon, for better flavor)
4. Combine the Vegetable Oil, Honey, and Granulated Sugar in a small pot. Simmer over medium heat. Once it starts bubbling, give it a couple of minutes (while stirring) before you take it off the heat.
5. Then add in Vanilla Extract. (If you add in vanilla while it’s heating, you’ll lose all the flavor)
6. Immediately pour over oat mixture and mix well.
7. Spread granola onto a baking sheet and press it down.
8. Bake for 20-30 minutes or until the granola is a light golden brown. To keep it chunky, don’t stir. Instead, make sure you move the pan around once during the baking.
9. After it’s done, if you want to add coconut, raisins, craisins, or another mix-in, do it then so those ingredients won’t get hard during baking.

NOTE: I just add a little more veggie oil and honey to the pot to make up for my extra ingredient additions. #granola #recipe #recipeoftheday

It doesn’t seem to matter what the suggestion is, when “Him Outdoors” asks if I want to go, like a golden retriever, I’m jumping in the car, excited to go check it out.

At least I keep my head in the window with minimal drooling.

We rummaged around Moses B. Glick’s, a humongous industrial salvage yard in Fleetwood, PA.

Yes, I was wearing a dress. 🤦 It was spur of the moment. My oldest son was heading over to look for some sort of tabletop, so “Him Outdoors” and I decided to go, too. Why not? At least I was able to change out of my sandals and into something slightly more appropriate.

I hadn’t been to Glick’s before, and had wandered ahead of “Him Outdoors” into a creepy area with a bunch of open-doored semi-trailers. I was just thinking how it was the perfect setting for a zombie movie, when my son stepped out of one of the trailers, cheerily saying, “Hi, M♥️m!” (I pretend my sons use hearts whenever they reference me)

He’s lucky I didn’t karate chop him.

Glick’s is amazing.

This sprawling scrapyard is well-organized, so all of the ginormous metal pipes are in one area, while all of the shopping carts are together (Bubbles from “Trailer Park Boys” would love it), the hoses, the metal storage cabinets, just ... everything. All together.

Glick’s wasn’t always like that, which would have made it feel more like a treasure hunt, but also twice as difficult to find what you wanted, I’d imagine. What a job that must have been to get it all sorted out.

Hey, it’s even fun for someone like me who is not exactly building a table or hunting for metal scrap. I’d suggest bringing along a pair of work gloves. My son let me have the right hand (he’s left-handed, and I’m ambidextrous), so we could better sort through a large bin of metal stuff.

My son found the tabletop he wanted. He left with two options “just in case.” Although I left empty-handed, I would definitely go back just to look at all the stuff. I have no idea what half of it does, but it sure is interesting.
